Stay Salty, Shine Bright — Pastor Eletha Daniels (Matthew 5:13–16)
The first Sunday of the month is always special at WatsNaz—we sit and fellowship together as a church family and we share communion as one body in Christ. It’s a simple, beautiful rhythm that reminds us who we are and why we gather: to worship Jesus and love one another.
This week had an unexpected twist. Pastor Ryan wasn’t able to preach due to an unexpected surgery earlier in the week. We’re grateful he’s recovering, and we invite you to keep him in prayer. In God’s good timing, Pastor Eletha Daniels—visiting from out of town—stepped up to share the message and served our church with warmth, humor, and a clear word from Scripture.
Pastor Eletha opened with a lighthearted baking story about an “Oklahoma cake” that accidentally got way too much salt—an unforgettable illustration that salt is powerful in small amounts. Jesus says “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13); Christians are meant to live in such a way that people develop a spiritual thirst for the Living Water (John 4). If our presence doesn’t awaken that thirst, it’s worth asking whether our “saltiness” is being diluted—not by a sudden decision, but by small, gradual choices that pull us away from Jesus. Staying close to Him through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience keeps our lives distinct and flavorful.
She then turned to Jesus’ words, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14–16). Light isn’t meant to be hidden—it belongs on a stand where it can help everyone in the house. Pastor Eletha shared a vulnerable story of fear in a dark moment and how the presence of a trusted friend brought light and steadiness. That’s a picture of our calling: to push back darkness with the presence of Christ—through everyday kindness, Spirit-led courage, practical help, generous giving, and faithful prayer. The takeaway was simple and concrete: stay close to Jesus, keep your saltiness, and shine His light wherever you go.
